The following is a list of magazines that pay writers $250 or more per article. All of the magazines accept queries or submissions from freelance writers. The list is in no particular order.

1. Oklahoma Today is a regional magazine covering the people, places, events, and culture of Oklahoma. They’re published bimonthly, with a circulation of 38,000. They pay 25 cents per word. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

2. WaveLength Magazine “promotes safe, ecologically sensitive paddling, guides readers to useful products and services, and explores marine issues.” They prefer queries. They pay $250-$300 for photos/articles about adventure destinations. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

3. Kentucky Living is a regional magazine covering the people, places, and history of Kentucky. They also have a focus on energy issues, and electric co-op member news. They pay up to $935 for articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

4. Poets & Writers is a bimonthly magazine about writers and writing. They do not publish creative writing, but they do publish articles about the writing life, news, trends, profiles of writers, and how-to articles about writing. 5. KitPlanes publishes articles about amateur-built aircraft construction. They accept articles “on all phases of aircraft construction, from basic design, to flight trials, to construction technique in wood, metal and composite.” They pay $250 to $1,000 per article.
