7 Short Story Publishers that Pay $100+ Per Story

The following is a list of short story publishers that pay writers. All of the publishers listed are currently accepting submissions. The list is in no particular order.

1. Humans Wanted is a forthcoming anthology, successfully funded by a Kickstarter campaign. The tagline is “when going somewhere dangerous, take a human.” They pay $250 for short stories between 3,000 and 6,000 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

2. Firelight Publishing is currently seeking submissions for their upcoming anthology, Horror Library.  They pay 3 cents per word, plus one contributor copy. They seek stories 2,000 to 6,000 words. They want stories that are “light” horror, along the lines of the Twilight Zone, Black Mirror, or Tales from the Dark Side. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

3. Fahrenheit Brooks is currently seeking submissions for the first book in their SpeKulative Stories Anthology Series, Automobilia. They want stories from every genre; romance, mystery, sci-fi, etc. They seek to celebrate the influence of the automobile own the hearts and minds of people.  They pay 5 cents a word. 4. Podcastle publishes fantasy stories in audio form, via their podcast. They pay 6 cents per word, up to 6,000 words. They pay $100 for reprints over 2,000 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

5. Okey-Pankey is currently seeking submissions of fiction, prose, and poetry. They pay $100 to contributors, with a word limit of 1,500 words. They seem to be a general literary publisher. Their tagline is “Literary oddments for busy people.” The deadline is August 31st, 2016. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

6. Ruminate Magazine is currently seeking submissions of short stories. The deadline is August 15th, 2016.Their tagline is “chewing on life, faith, and art.” They pay $15 per 400 words, up to 5,500 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

7. Litbreak is a brand new online literary journal. They are currently seeking submissions of short stories. Starting in September, they will pay $100 for every short story they publish. The word limit is 1,500 to 10,000 words.  To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
