6 Magazines that Pay Writers $200+ Per Article

The following is a list of magazines that pay writers $200 per article for at least some of the articles they publish.

1. American Quilter is the magazine of the American Quilter’s Society. They publish quilting patterns, tips, products, news, and quilt-contest winners. They are published six times per year. 2. Skirt! seeks to “publish a monthly magazine that speaks to all sides of a women’s personality – their work, their play, their families and their creativity, through one of kind content and effective advertising.” They pay $200 for essays, with monthly themes. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

3. Youth Today is the only independent, nationally distributed newspaper that is read by thousands of professional youth workers and administrators of youth service, youth advocacy, and youth policy programs. They pay professional rates to writers, as negotiated. To learn more, read this page.

4. Hoof Beats Magazine is the most widely read harness racing magazine. They are around 70 percent freelance written, covering topics related to Standardbreds and harness racing. Pay ranges from $100 to $500. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

5. USAA Magazine covers personal finance topis for USAA members and the military community. Their objective is to “help USAA members become smarter financial consumers.” They expect pitches to come from writers with at least 10 years experience – so writers should demand professional pay for their work. 6. National Geographic Traveler is the travel magazine for the famed National Geographic. They accept submissions from freelance writers. They cover “national and state parks, historic places, cities, little-known or undiscovered places, train trips, cruises, and driving trips.” Expect payment to be competitive with other national magazines.
