VICE World News is looking for narrative features and investigations that have an international scope. They are particularly interested in stories that overlap with the core coverage areas of VICE: “extremism, nationalism, climate change, inequality, drugs, and sex.” Their rates for reported pieces start at a minimum of 50 cents. GameCrate is an editorial site that focuses on gaming and hardware. They are seeking freelance writers who know about computer hardware and/or gaming. They will pay $100 to $150 per article. They can currently only work with freelance writers “who DO NOT live in one of the following states: DE, FL, GA, IA, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NH, NY, OK, PA, SC, VA, VT, WI, WY or those who live outside the United States (determined on a per-country basis).” To learn more, refer to their editor’s Tweet and this page.

Rogue is an Ireland-based online publication for women, by women. They cover “everything from music and beauty to personal essays, opinion and interviews with extraordinary women.” They are accepting pitches from currently underrepresented groups in Irish media. The pitched pieces “can be works of fact, fiction, personal, interviews or research-based and the finished product can be written, audio/video, visual or a mix of those things.” They will pay €150 for written pieces of 800+ words. Visual Arts News is the only magazine that is dedicated to contemporary visual art in Atlantic Canada. They are seeking “pitches, ideas, stories and exhibitions about Mysticism in the Arts in Atlantic Canada.” They will pay $250 per piece (about 1,000 words). Details here and here.

Laptop Mag is devoted to helping people choose the best laptop. Their editor-in-chief has tweeted, “so I’ve gotten a lot of great pitches for Laptop Mag and in the process of putting folks to work freelancing but not nearly enough women are hitting me up. I need you! Send your ideas to laptopmagpitches@futurenet.com.” Their rate for newbie writers starts at $300. Their rate for reviews is $400 to $1,000 and for how-tos, it starts at $125. Ars Technica is a website that specializes in news, reviews, and analysis of technology trends. They cover technology, policy, science, cars, gaming, gadgets, and more. Their senior gaming editor is looking for gaming-related writing ideas. He is “open to all kinds of article ideas: features, trends, interviews, tech deep-dives, cultural analysis, business analysis, player/community analysis.” According to payment reports, they pay up to $0.44 per word. Detour Detroit is an email newsletter for the Detroit community. They are seeking pitches for a series in collaboration with the Detroit Equity Action Lab (DEAL). They want story pitches from BIPOC journalists about mental health issues in the marginalized communities of Detroit. They will pay up to $500 for stories of up to 1,200 words. SheKnows empowers women through discussions and articles related to women’s issues including health, relationships, sex, parenting, and beauty. They are looking for essay pitches from parents about relationships – “dating as a parent, building intimacy, thoughts on marriage/parenting in 2020, interesting personal experiences in these chaotic times.” Your POV should be interesting and relevant to their 30-40 parents demographic. Study Hall is “a media newsletter & online support network for media workers.” They have tweeted, “if you have a sad, funny, bizarre, or otherwise singular media labor experience you have been chewing on for a while, please pitch erin.schwartz@studyhall.xyz your memoir.” Priority will be given to BIPOC, trans, and disabled writers. The New York Times’ smarter living editor is seeking service journalism pitches from POC journalists. He is generally seeking COVID-19 focused pitches but contributors can send other pitches too. Dwell focuses on modern architecture and design. They are seeking “home / design /architecture writers for home tours and essays on the social and political forces that shape housing.” They will pay $200-$400+ per piece. Indiegraf is “a network of journalist-entrepreneurs and independently-owned digital publishers sharing resources to serve their local communities sustainably.” They publish a weekly newsletter called Indie Publisher that demystifies news entrepreneurship. They are looking for pitches for Indie Publisher. They want pitches about “indie media publishers doing amazing things.” They pay $400 CAD for pieces of about 500 to 600 words. Color Bloq is a platform for queer and trans people of color. They are accepting pitches for their upcoming WORLDBUILDING collection. They invite writers to “explore what it would mean to imagine a world that centers both justice and joy.” They will pay $500-$1,000 for feature-length articles and cultural critiques (1,200-2,000 words), $275 for personal essays (600-800 words), and $500-$1,000 for alternative formats (e.g. interviews, reviews, roundtables, experimental mixed-format, multi-person collaborations, and more).
