Although I’ve worked with agents and publishers in the past, it’s been a long time since I’ve been involved in the submission process or read a how-to book on the topic. I picked up this book to see what, if anything, has changed over the years. The answer is not that much. Competition is still fierce, guidelines must be followed, and patience is mandatory.

What has changed is how the information is presented. The author inserts many helpful links to learn more on specific aspects, an option that wasn’t available when I was reading how-to books. The many links can make some chapters appear more like a detailed summary, although busy readers might prefer this over longer text.

The other change is the amount of caution expressed (necessary, I believe) to avoid scams or people who will exploit an author’s dream of becoming published. Unscrupulous agents, publishers, and editors are far more prevalent than they were a few years ago, so the tips offered to detect legitimate agents and publishers from scammers is really helpful.

The chapters on query letters, pitches, and synopses are essential reading, but again they are more of a detailed overview. As the author notes, there are plenty of articles and books that can help authors with the nitty-gritty details. I liked the practical but positive tone, and the authors’ reference to personal experiences. This book will definitely help beginners navigate their way through the ups and downs of manuscript submission. What I don’t know, however, is if all the links work or will be relevant down the road.
