The following is a list of short story publishers that pay $150 or more for the stories they publish. All of the publishers are currently seeking submissions, but two of them have deadlines approaching very quickly.

The list is in no particular order.

You’ll notice that the list is heavily weighted towards sci-fi, speculative fiction, and fantasy. The reason? That’s where the money is.

1. Red Sun Magazine pays semi-pro rates for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror stories. They pay $100 for stories 3,000 to 5,000 words in length, and $150 for works 15k-17k words. They also pay for comics. 2. Metaphysical Circus Press has a deadline approaching very soon – October 15th! If you have a story that is  “literary fantastic, slipstream, weird, magical realist [or] supernatural,” now is the time to submit. They pay 6 cents per word, up to $200. 3. FIYAH is a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features stories about the African Diaspora. They are currently reading  submissions for their 2017 themed issue “Spilling Tea.” The deadline is January 1st, 2017.  They pay $150 for short stories between 2,000 and 7,000 words, and $300 for novellettes up to 15,000 words. 4. Hath No Fury is an upcoming anthology by Ragnaraok publications, with another tight deadline of October 15th. Submitted stories “must feature a well-developed female protagonist who is not just a cardboard cutout. She needs to have a clear goal, motivation, and conflict. She has a background that shaped her to be who she is.” They pay 10 cents per word. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
5. Book Smugglers Publishing is currently seeking submissions for their upcoming anthology “Gods and Monsters.” According to their submission guidelines “As usual, we encourage authors to subvert these sample themes, to expand upon what “gods and/or monsters” means, and adapt the prompt to other possible connotations and genres under the Speculative Fiction umbrella.” The deadline is December 31st, 2016. 6. The Binge Watching Cure, a forthcoming anthology to be published in 2017, is currently seeking submissions of short stories.  It will be an anthology of stories that gradually increase in length.The deadline for submission is December 31st, 2016. However, the anthology is slowing getting filled, so don’t delay. They pay $200 for short stories under 5,000 words, and $500 for stories that are longer. 7. One Story is a magazine that publishes one story, in print, every three weeks. They pay $500 per story, plus 25 contributor copies. They accept stories of any style “as long as they are good.” To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
